Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
An new initialism surfaced several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to care for a child who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Reported Truce
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these accusations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed peace has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
