Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
