The racing series is implementing what is considered the most significant technical shift in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.
The revised engines, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased battery power, requiring significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

The primary aim was to render a range of advanced features of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the widest audience.
Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in favour of descriptive names that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the technology.
Key Technical Innovations
The FIA states that competitors will have greater control to choose strategies regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and efficiency.
The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to improve the audience's understanding of the race battle.
- Overtake Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a car is less than a second the vehicle in front to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
- Power Mode: This is a manual power boost from the energy recovery system that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver maximum power at the activation of a control.
Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is capped.
- Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – spreading on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and angling down in the turns for optimal cornering performance.
- Recharge: The system can harvest energy with power recovered from braking, or during partial power application at the straight's end or in corners where only partial power is required.
2026 Car Specifications
The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.
Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.
Drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will feature active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will move on the straights to improve speed and enhance velocity and click back into place for peak handling.
Tyres will keep the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.
What's Changing in the Engines?
The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the ERS, increasing from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.
The ERS setup is made less complex through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the complicated and costly component that recovered energy from the turbocharger.
All vehicles will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or lab-created processes.
