Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
