Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be tough to recreate the special mission he felt as England’s manager.

The former coach indicated his intention to channel his attention toward working with young people and addressing what he described as a dominant downbeat story now found in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, the manager was questioned on rumors linking him with available jobs in the top flight and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Prior to the publication of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, the author stated that he is deeply committed about providing role models for teenagers, utilizing lessons from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate feels that his experience coaching England, during which the team transformed from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, he commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Discord

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often highlights division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit drawn from his notable professional journey.
