The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
