The Legend of 766 - Cook's Dominance of the Australian Team
Sir Alastair's record-breaking 766 by an Englishman in Australian conditions was only surpassed by the great Wally Hammond
Brisbane is not a city to give the Three Lions badly required hope for the Ashes
In the wake of losing to Australia during the opening match, the visiting team need to regroup before heading to the famous Gabba, a venue where England have not won since 1986
Men wearing three lions have frequently been lambs to the slaughter at this challenging venue
A Shining Knight's Success
Among a recent history of broken English hopes, hopes and athletes exists a motivational tale provided by an exceptional player
It is exactly the 15th anniversary of Sir Alastair Cook conquered the Gabba with a career-defining 235 without loss, preserving the initial Test of 2010-11 paving England's path for their unique Ashes triumph down under in the past 38 years
Historic Achievement
This marked the start of Cook's triumphant tour of Australia; three centuries totaling 766 runs
Wally Hammond stands as the only Briton to score more runs during a Test series on Australian soil
The English triumphed 3-1, with every win by an innings
England hasn't achieved success at this venue since those glory days
Cook's Memories
"You forget the difficult moments, the apprehension and concern accompanying that success," the cricketer reflects
"I reflect proudly. I made an important impact during a campaign where the English secured a 3-1 victory down under with every match was achieved comprehensively"
The Road to Greatness
The path to his Australian epic began 18 months earlier at the end of the 2009 Ashes in England
Despite English victory, Cook averaged less than 25 achieving merely one performance over fifty
He desired better
"Cricket is a team game, the individuality creates the sensation that personal responsibility matters," he notes
Skill Development
Just 48 hours following the triumphant events, he was back at work hitting hundreds and hundreds bowls during training with Graham Gooch
The initial results proved positive
He scored three hundreds on the 2009-10 winter tours to South Africa and Bangladesh
Career-Defining Moments
When Cook returned to British conditions for that year's summer, the batsman performed poorly
In eight innings facing these opponents, his best performance totaled just 29 runs
Without runs at the end of the second day of the third Test facing Pakistan in London, Cook was convinced this would be his final Test performance before being dropped
"I found myself in the hospitality area, seeking the answer in the bottom of a beer bottle," he reveals
Critical Moment
His century guaranteed his seat in the squad down under
The team maintained preparations with two victories and one draw in practice matches on Australian soil
When the first Test arrived in Brisbane, they faced a Siddle hat-trick
Memorable Collaboration
Shortly prior to the third day's close, the opening pair started the English reply needing to overcome 221 runs
They achieved 19 without loss by day's end and followed up with a performance engraved in cricket memory
"My memory doesn't retain the messages, our discussions," Cook remembers
The opening pair contributed 188 for the first wicket
Cook's 235 not out represented the top score by an Englishman down under since the 1930s
Total Command
England capitalised on an incredible start during the following Test at Adelaide
Following Anderson's additional wicket the Australian batsman, the score read 2-3 and struggled throughout
Cook followed up his Queensland achievement by scoring 148 during a memorable Test for Kevin Pietersen dismantling the opposition bowlers
Ultimate Victory
The English might have secured the Ashes in Perth, only for Mitchell Johnson to foreshadow the havoc that would come later
Then came perhaps England's single greatest day during Ashes competition down under
At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the massive stadium of sports down under, during Boxing Day, the Australian team collapsed to 98 all out
"If Carlsberg did Boxing Days, it was that. There was disbelief when play concluded," recalls Cook
Series Conclusion
Driven by determination to secure the Ashes, Cook was at it again at the SCG
His 189 lifted England to 644, their best score in a Test in Australia
The uncertainty wasn't whether England would triumph the game and series, but the timing
"The feeling was unbelievable," recalls Cook
"After Tremlett dismissed the last player to secure victory, it was a moment of pure elation"
Legacy and Recognition
The batsman received top accolades
The subsequent seven years of his cricket journey were illuminated by additional achievements
Following his international retirement, Cook was knighted for sporting achievements
